Wonderwoods will become a vibrant hub of health and happiness bang in middle of the city of Utrecht. Somewhere you can immerse yourself in nature, nurture your health and wellbeing, live and breathe green, and eat, drink, shop, exercise, relax and work – all in one spot.

 

You can catchup with friends or enjoy a health solo lunch on our lush roof park while watching birds flit from tree to tree. Or have some family fun at our Vertical Forest Hub, where a ranger can tell you all about the flora and fauna at Wonderwoods. Or visit Nowhere, Europe’s first centre dedicated to immersive digital art. Soon you will become part of a thriving new community of people from far and wide – or from just around the corner.

VEGETATION

This is how we grow.

A hectare of vertical forest inspired by the rolling landscape of the nearby national park Utrechtse Heuvelrug.

Annually, this area – roughly the size of a football pitch – will absorb a minimum of 5,400kg of CO2 and generate at least 41,400 kg of oxygen.

Some 10,000 perennials of different species – 300 trees and around 75,000 bushes, shrubs and herbs – will be watered using an innovative irrigation system. Any excess water will be stored in a reservoir in the parking garage ready for the next watering.

Water retention boxes spread over the entire roof of each building will also collect rainwater to cool and nourish the plants. When they’re full – the levels are monitored using smart flow control – the rainwater will gently run off onto a lower roof surface. And so forth.

We work with the best green specialists from
Stefano Boeri Architetti, Laura Gatti Studio, Arcadis, Inbo, Van Den Berk Nurseries and De Koninklijke Ginkel Groep. 

Triangular-shaped when young and flat-topped when mature, this conifer is loved by birds for its seeds.
Black Pine
Wonderwoods will have a fern-tastic display of these ornamental plants, including the common polypody, soft shield fern, and alpine wood fern.
Ferns
Its bark resembles cork, and the tree flowers in May and June – when bees and birds will descend on the tree for a nectar and pollen party.
Field Maple
The berries of this shrub ripen in June, hence its name. Robins especially love its fruit – ripe or not! Its leaves turn from pink to red in the autumn.
Juneberry
An icon amongst trees, it gets its name from its distinctive white bark. Its leaves are readily munched on by ladybirds and caterpillars. Greenfinches devour its seeds. And woodpeckers often nest in its trunk.
Silver Birch
Birds roost in its branches and love snacking on its acorns. Unlike other species of oak, however, the acorn cups are hairy and resemble moss.

WILDLIFE
Say hello to your new neighbours.

Friendly birds and honey bees.

Not only will we welcome feathered friends as daily visitors, but some will stay with us here at Wonderwoods.

The roof will be home to a nesting box for peregrine falcons – the world's fastest animal. While a bee hotel will ensure a regular supply of fresh organic honey.

To further entice wildlife to live with us in the city, we will introduce sparrow, swift and bat boxes.

A small bird, the size of the robin, with grey-black plumage and a red tail – hence its name. It enjoys living in urban areas and is fond of cliff-like buildings.
Black Redstart
Blackbirds are monogamous, which means they mate for life. It can take them around two weeks to make a nest. The male fetches the twigs, leaves and mud – the female builds it!
Blackbird
A regular visitor to feeders all year round, the tit will take nuts and seeds to store for later. In winter, these birds flock together to hunt for food.
Great Tit
This dashing bird has a beautiful green plumage with flashes of yellow. It enjoys living in the city and is a big fan of black sunflower seeds.
Greenfinch
Peregrine falcons will nest in special boxes on the rooftop of Wonderwoods, away from everyone. But discreet webcams will give us a rare window into the life of the world’s fastest flying bird.
Peregrine Falcon
Everyone’s favourite bird. Come rain or shine, this red-breasted songbird sings all year round: it can even be spotted in the evenings crooning away by the streetlights.
Robin
This remarkable aerial acrobat can fly as a high as a small aeroplane. It also navigates without GPS and adjusts its flight for different wind speeds – even in its sleep!
Swift
A tiny brown bird with a remarkably loud voice. To keep warm in winter, it will snuggle up with around 10 other wrens in one nest.

A bicycle is undoubtedly the cleanest and healthiest form of transport. To make it as easy as we can for cyclists, residents and office users will be given at least one permanent spot in the spacious and secure indoor bicycle park.

 

Wonderwoods will also promote e-car, e-bike and e-scooter sharing. You can reserve, unlock and pay for your mode of transport in just a few clicks via a mobile app.

 

And naturally, there are advantages to being on the doorstep of the largest public transport hub in the Netherlands.

 

As we aim to encourage car-sharing and other mobility solutions, there will only be a limited number of private parking spaces available at Wonderwoods.
